Best Time to Visit

February to April (harvest season and early autumn) offers warm weather and vineyard activity. December to February is warmer but busier. Avoid June to August when Tasmania's weather is coolest and wettest. Spring (September to November) shows vineyard renewal and can be pleasant for touring.

Perched in the cool highlands of northern Tasmania, Jansz is one of the Pipers River region's most established names in sparkling wine. Founded in 1985 — during a formative period for Tasmanian viticulture — the winery has spent nearly four decades refining its focus on estate-grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, producing sparkling and still wines that reflect the distinctive character of one of Australia's southernmost wine regions.

The Wines

Jansz has built its identity around sparkling wine, with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay forming the backbone of the range. These two varieties are well-suited to the Pipers River region, where the extended cool-climate growing season allows gradual ripening and the development of the natural acidity that underpins quality traditional-method sparkling wine. Still wines made from the same varieties are also available to taste at the cellar door, offering a different lens through which to appreciate the regional style.

The Vineyard

Pipers River sits among Australia's coolest and most southerly wine regions. The maritime influence of the Tasman Sea moderates temperatures through the growing season, slowing ripening and encouraging complexity in the fruit. Tasmania's clean air and low disease pressure mean the vines can be managed with care, and the resulting wines carry a finesse and freshness that's closely tied to the place they come from.

This climatic profile — cool summers, a long ripening window, and natural acidity — mirrors, in broad terms, the conditions that have made Champagne's northern French region famous for sparkling wine. It was this similarity that shaped Jansz's founding vision in the mid-1980s, when Tasmania was beginning to establish its credentials as a serious cool-climate producer.

Cellar Door Experience

The cellar door at Pipers Brook is a modern, purpose-built space with views over the surrounding vineyard. Inside, knowledgeable staff lead tastings across the sparkling and still wine range, walking you through the winemaking philosophy behind each wine. The format suits both those new to Tasmanian wine and those with more experience who want to dig into the detail.

Tours of the winery and vineyard are available for visitors who want a more in-depth look at how the wines are made — from vineyard management through to the production of traditional-method sparkling wine. Booking is recommended for tours and is advisable for tastings too, particularly if you're visiting with a group or during busier periods.

A wine shop on-site stocks the full range, making it straightforward to take bottles home or put together a gift selection.

Getting There

Jansz is located in Pipers Brook, in northern Tasmania, roughly 20 minutes' drive from Launceston via the Midland Highway. The site is accessible for caravans and motorhomes. Public transport to the area is limited, so travelling by private vehicle or as part of an organised tour is the most practical option.

Visitor Tips

  • Book ahead for tours and tastings, especially between December and April when visitor numbers are higher
  • Allow 1–2 hours to make the most of the cellar door, particularly if you're including a winery tour
  • Dress for the weather — Tasmania's climate is cool and can change quickly at any time of year, so bring an extra layer even in summer
  • Plan a regional day by combining Jansz with other Pipers River cellar doors nearby
  • Timing your visit around February to April puts you in the winery during harvest and early autumn, when there's activity in both the vineyard and the winery; spring (September to November) is quieter and sees the vines coming back to life after winter
