Hartley Historic Site Visitor Centre

Hartley, New South Wales

About Hartley & the Blue Mountains

Hartley sits in the shadow of the Blue Mountains, a landscape shaped by colonial history and dramatic ridgelines. The village was a crucial crossing point on the Great Western Highway, and its heritage character remains evident in the historic sites scattered throughout the area. For touring caravans and hikers, Hartley offers immediate access to excellent trails and a concentration of historic attractions that tell the story of early European exploration.

Walks & Trails

The best walks are right on the doorstep. Sculpture Walk, Kew-Y-Ahn Bell Rock Heritage Trail, and Rowsons River Walk all start at or very near the visitor centre. For longer hikes, try Coxs Alternative Ascent, Coxs Road, or Sir Joseph Cook Boardwalk (all within 6km). More challenging options include Pony Express, Pottery Track, and Lockyers Line.

Camping

Caravan parks and campsites surround the area. Venice Caravan Park is 4km away, while Mount York Summit Camping Area and Lockyers Track Head are both within 6km for those wanting a more remote experience. Lithgow Tourist Park and Lake Lyell Campground offer larger facilities 11–12km south.

Attractions & Things to See

Hartley's main draw is its colonial heritage. Explorers Monument marks the route taken by early expeditions, while Mitchells Pass 1832 and Mitchell Obelisk commemorate Major Mitchell's crossing of the mountains. The Zig Zag Railway (12km away) offers a working heritage railway experience, and Coxs Cave provides underground exploration. Scenic lookouts at Mitchells Ridge and Pulpit Rock deliver panoramic views across the range.

Pubs & Dining

The nearest pubs are in Lithgow, 9km south: Lansdowne Hotel, Lithgow Hotel, Donnybrook Royal Hotel, and Commercial Hotel Motel all provide meals and accommodation.

Golf

Lithgow Golf Club is 16km away, with Blackheath Golf Course 22km further into the mountains.

Wineries & Cellar Doors

For wine touring, Dryridge Estate and Megalong Creek Estate are 25–26km away in the cooler mountain valleys.
