History & Significance

The Zig Zag Railway opened in 1869 and was an engineering feat designed to navigate the steep grades of the Blue Mountains escarpment. The original line operated until 1910, when a more direct railway route bypassed it. The heritage railway was reopened for tourists in 1997 and now operates restored vintage steam and diesel locomotives on the original scenic route.
