History & Significance
Hermannsburg was founded in 1877 as a Lutheran mission station serving the Arrernte people in the West MacDonnell Ranges. The precinct includes the original mission buildings, teacher's house, school, and church, reflecting European and Aboriginal settlement history. It became significant in Aboriginal art history as a centre for the Hermannsburg School of watercolour painters in the mid-20th century. The site is now jointly managed and remains culturally important to the local Arrernte community.
