About

Finke Gorge National Park protects one of the most ancient river valleys on Earth — the Finke River has flowed in its current channel for approximately 100 million years, making it one of the oldest rivers in the world. History & Significance

Finke Gorge National Park was established in 1967 to protect one of Earth's oldest river systems. The Finke River has maintained its current channel for approximately 100 million years, making it geologically significant. Palm Valley, the park's centrepiece, is a relict desert oasis harbouring the Livistona mariae red cabbage palm, endemic to this location and found nowhere else on Earth.
