History & Significance
The Ochre Pits are traditional ochre mining sites used by the Arrernte people for thousands of years. Ochre was and is valued for body decoration, ceremonies and trading. The natural deposits of red, yellow and white ochre remain culturally significant to local Aboriginal communities.
Getting There
Located 18 km south of Alice Springs via Ross Highway. Well-signposted turnoff, short drive from main road. Accessible by standard vehicle.
Parking
Free car park at the site. Limited capacity (roughly 10β15 spaces). No sealed overflow area; popular times may see limited availability. Accessible parking available.
