History & Significance
West MacDonnell National Park (Tjoritja) was formally established in 1991 to protect the spectacular parallel ridges and gorges stretching 644 km west of Alice Springs. The ranges are the traditional homeland of the Western Arrernte people and contain rare plant species that survived the last ice age in sheltered creek valleys. The park preserves significant cultural and geological heritage of central Australia's Red Centre.

Getting There
Accessible from Alice Springs via Larapinta Drive heading west. Road is sealed as far as Glen Helen (145km) with most gorges signposted off the main road.
Parking
Free parking available at most gorge and waterhole trailheads along the ranges. Capacity varies by site; popular spots like Simpsons Gap and Standley Chasm can fill during peak times. Most carparks are unsealed and accessible to standard vehicles; some rougher tracks require 4WD. Overflow parking available at nearby sites.
