About the National Heritage List
The National Heritage List identifies natural, historic, and indigenous places of outstanding heritage significance to Australia. Managed by the Australian Heritage Council and administered by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), listings are assessed against nine criteria covering events, processes, aesthetics, scientific importance, and cultural traditions.
Listing on the National Heritage List triggers protections under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). Any proposed action that could have a significant impact on a listed place requires referral to the federal environment minister.
