About Echo Point Lookout

Three Sisters viewpoint

Echo Point Lookout sits on the edge of the Jamison Valley in Katoomba, offering one of the most recognised views in New South Wales: the Three Sisters, a trio of sandstone rock formations rising dramatically from the valley floor. The lookout is open around the clock, seven days a week, making it accessible at any hour — a genuine advantage for early risers chasing good light or those wanting to experience the valley in the quiet of the evening.

The Three Sisters and Their Story

The three towering formations — standing at different heights above the valley — are the centrepiece of the view from Echo Point. According to Aboriginal legend, the sisters were transformed into stone, a story tied to the Gundungurra and Darug peoples of the Blue Mountains region.

The lookout has drawn visitors since the early 20th century, when the Blue Mountains became a popular destination for Sydneysiders escaping the city. The view has changed little since then — the sandstone formations and the vast expanse of the Jamison Valley remain as they were, with the Blue Mountains' characteristic eucalyptus haze often giving the landscape its characteristic blue tint.

What to See and Do

The main draw is the view itself. From the lookout platform, you can take in the Three Sisters up close (in relative terms — you're still looking across a significant valley drop) and observe the forested valley stretching into the distance.

Photography is a natural activity here. The formations photograph well in the golden hours — early morning light catches the eastern faces of the rocks, while late afternoon brings warmth to the sandstone. A wide-angle lens or a phone with a good zoom will help you capture both the scale of the valley and the detail of the formations.

The platform is pram-friendly, and the site suits visitors of all ages. That said, some paths in the surrounding area can be uneven, so sturdy footwear is worthwhile even if you're only planning a short walk from the car park.

Private guided tours from Sydney are available if you'd prefer to visit with context and convenience — several operators run full-day Blue Mountains experiences that include a stop at Echo Point alongside other regional highlights such as wildlife parks.

Getting There and Access

Echo Point Lookout is located in Katoomba, roughly two hours west of Sydney via the Great Western Highway. From Katoomba's main street, follow Cliff Drive to Echo Point Road, where you'll find a large free car park with accessible parking positioned close to the lookout platform.

If you're coming from Sydney without a car, Katoomba is well-served by regular train services from Central Station, and coach connections are also available. From Katoomba station, the lookout is reachable on foot (around 15–20 minutes) or by local transport.

Visitor Tips

  • Arrive before 9am or in the late afternoon. The platform can become very crowded through the middle of the day, particularly on weekends and during school holidays.
  • Check visibility before you go. The Three Sisters are best appreciated on a clear day; low cloud or heavy mist can obscure the formations entirely, though atmospheric mist can also make for interesting photography.
  • Bring your own food and water. There are no cafes or food facilities at the lookout itself. Katoomba township is only a short distance away and has a range of cafes and restaurants if you need to stop before or after.
  • The car park fills quickly on peak days. Weekday visits offer a noticeably calmer experience and easier parking.
  • Shade is limited on the platform, so sun protection is worth considering, particularly in spring and summer.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) tend to offer the clearest skies and the most comfortable temperatures for visiting. Summer can be hot and draws larger crowds, while winter mornings can bring mist and cold temperatures — though the mist sometimes clears by mid-morning to reveal excellent visibility.

Midweek visits at either end of the day will give you the best combination of good light and manageable crowds.

Nearby Attractions

Katoomba itself is worth exploring — the township has a strong arts and café culture and serves as the main hub for Blue Mountains tourism. The broader Blue Mountains region offers walking trails, further lookouts along Cliff Drive, and access to the valley floor via the Scenic World cable car and railway, located a short distance from Echo Point.
