About Mt Buffalo National Park

Mount Buffalo National Park is one of Victoria's oldest national parks, centred on a high granite plateau rising to 1723m above sea level in the Victorian Alps. The park offers year-round activities — skiing and snowshoeing in winter, and hiking, rock climbing, wildflower walks, and swimming in granite gorges in summer. Its unique subalpine environment supports rare plant communities found nowhere else.

Getting There

Drive to Bright (320km northeast of Melbourne via the Hume Highway and Great Alpine Road), then follow the Buffalo Road 30km up the mountain to the plateau.

Visitor Tips

  • The Lake Catani loop (6km) and the Gorge walk are the best summer day walks. Visit the Gorge in late morning when sunshine hits the granite walls. Book the historic Mount Buffalo Chalet for an overnight stay with mountain views.
