Ingham sits on the Bruce Highway in Far North Queensland, positioned as the primary access point for Hinchinbrook Island National Park and the surrounding mountainous hinterland. This is prime territory for serious hikers and island explorers, with everything from day walks to multi-day wilderness trails within easy reach.

Walks & Trails

The Thorsborne Trail on Hinchinbrook Island is one of Australia's most renowned multi-day hikes, accessible just 5km away. For day walks, try Mercer Lane locally, or venture into the ranges for Jourama Falls Lookout Walk (26km), Paluma Dam to Jourama Falls (28km), and Blackhole Track (29km). Further afield, Mt Straloch Track, Bambaroo Track, Dalrymple Gap Walking Track, and Hermit Creek Hut Track offer moderate to challenging hikes through subtropical rainforest.

Camping

Ingham Tourist Park is just 3km away for caravan and motorhome stops. For backcountry camping, Jourama Falls camping area (25km) provides access to waterfall country, while Lake Paluma Camp Site (34km) and Bambaroo Billabong Bush Camp (30km) put you deeper in the ranges. Halifax Bay Wetland National Park has two camping areas at 22km and 27km.

Hinchinbrook Island dominates this region—a rugged national park island famous for its coastal and rainforest trails. Wallaman Falls (45km) is Australia's highest single-drop waterfall, while Girringun National Park (47km) encompasses much of the hinterland hiking network. Agnes Island (52km) offers another island experience in Halifax Bay.
