Wilpena Pound is a vast natural amphitheatre formed by a ring of ancient Precambrian quartzite mountains enclosing a 80 km² basin in the [Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park](/au/national-parks/sa/ikara-flinders-ranges-national-park). The only entry to the pound is through a narrow gorge carved by Wilpena Creek. Sacred to the Adnyamathanha people, the pound holds deep cultural significance and the name 'Ikara' means 'meeting place' in the local language.
