History & Significance

Kiandra was a significant gold rush town established in the 1850s–1860s in the Snowy Mountains. At its peak, it housed thousands of miners and was one of Australia's highest settlements. The township declined sharply after the gold rush and was largely abandoned. Today, scattered ruins, a cemetery, and foundations remain as reminders of its prosperous past.

Getting There

Near Kiandra village, approximately 70 km south-west of Cooma. Access via the Alpine Way or Snowy Mountains Highway. High altitude location (1,457 m)—road may be closed or hazardous in winter snow.

Parking

Free, informal parking near the ruins site. Limited spaces—capacity unclear. No formal facilities. Roads to the site are unsealed and rough; high-clearance vehicles recommended in poor conditions.

•Bring water and sun protection—there's minimal shelter
•Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid midday heat
