About Khancoban & the Australian Alps

Khancoban sits at the foot of the Australian Alps in southern NSW, close to the Victoria border and the Snowy Mountains. This quiet alpine village serves as a basecamp for walkers and touring travellers heading into high country terrain, with easy access to mountain peaks, wilderness trails, and pristine backcountry campsites.

Walks & Trails

The area offers over a dozen walking tracks ranging from easy to hard. The Valentine Fire Trail is an accessible starting point, while more experienced hikers can tackle the Hannels Spur Track or Main Range Walking Track. Peak destinations include Blue Lake Walk, Old SMA Ski Tow, and the scenic Spencers Creek Suspension Bridge. Most trails sit 27–40km from the visitor centre, making them day trips or overnight hikes from base camp.

Camping

Accommodation options range from developed caravan parks to remote wilderness camps. Khancoban Lakeside Caravan Park is on your doorstep, while Bradneys Gap and Indi Bridge Reserve offer quieter alternatives within 11km. For backcountry campers, Geehi Flat Campsite, Jagungal Wilderness Camp 2, and the free Towong Reserve provide bases deeper into the mountains.

Attractions & Things to See

The region is defined by its mountain peaks and natural landmarks. Mount Jagungal, Gungartan, and Watsons Crags are major summits, while Mount Sentinel, Alice Rawson Peak, and Abbott Peak offer shorter ascents for visitors based in and around Khancoban.

Khancoban Country Golf Club is just 2km away, ideal for a casual round. Corryong Golf Course sits 23km south for those willing to travel a bit further.

Pubs & Dining

The Khancoban Alpine Inn is within walking distance for meals and drinks after a day on the trails. For a wider selection, Corryong Hotel Motel is 22km away and offers accommodation alongside food and beverage.
