History & Significance

Walls of Jerusalem is part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, recognised for its pristine alpine and glacial landscapes. The biblical place names (Solomon's Jewels, Damascus Gate, The Temple) were bestowed by early settlers and reflect the dramatic, otherworldly character of the terrain. The park protects ancient pencil pine forests, some trees over 1,000 years old, and glacial features sculpted during the last ice age. It remains one of Tasmania's least-developed and most remote wilderness areas.

Getting There

From Hobart, drive north to Deloraine (approximately 1.5 hours), then continue to Walls of Jerusalem National Park carpark near Mersey Forest Road. The park entrance is accessible by 2WD vehicle, but the final approach requires traversing rough forest roads. No public transport. Total drive time from Hobart approximately 2.5–3 hours.

Parking

Free parking at the main carpark near Mersey Forest Road. Capacity is limited (approximately 20–30 spaces); arrive early during peak summer months or use alternative parking in nearby forest areas. No sealed facilities. The carpark is accessible to standard vehicles, but 4WD recommended for rough final approach road.

Visitor Tips

  • Start early in the day and carry detailed topographic maps—GPS alone is insufficient in this trackless terrain.
  • Water is abundant from alpine lakes and streams, but carry a filter or treatment tablets.
  • Weather can deteriorate rapidly; always carry waterproof gear and be prepared to turn back.
  • Camp only at designated sites to protect the fragile alpine environment.
  • Bring high-energy food; resupply is impossible once you depart the trailhead.
  • Allow extra time for navigation through open alpine areas—progress is slower than on marked trails.
