Cradle Mountain, Tasmania

About Cradle Mountain & Tasmania's Wilderness

Cradle Mountain dominates the northern highlands of Tasmania, rising dramatically from a landscape of alpine moorland, ancient rainforest, and glacial lakes. The area is Tasmania's premier hiking destination, drawing walkers and outdoor enthusiasts from across Australia to experience some of the country's most spectacular mountain terrain.

Walks & Trails

The visitor centre sits at the heart of an extensive network of trails ranging from easy riverside walks to challenging alpine hikes. Start with Enchanted Walk or the Rainforest Walk for accessible introductions to the area's native forest. For more serious walkers, Dove Canyon Track, Pencil Pine Track, and King Billy Track offer deeper exploration of the high country. The Penguin Cradle Trail and Pencile Pine Creek/Dover River Junction Track showcase the region's river systems and forest diversity.

Attractions & Things to See

Cradle Mountain itself is the centrepiece, with its distinctive craggy peaks visible from multiple vantage points throughout the region. Dove Lake sits beneath the mountain and offers spectacular views; visit the Dove Lake Boatshed for access to the water. The Overland Track is Australia's most famous multi-day hiking route, starting near here and traversing to Lake St Clair. Further afield, Mole Creek Karst National Park features impressive cave systems including Marakoopa Cave and King Solomons Cave.

Wineries & Cellar Doors

The cooler valleys around Cradle Mountain produce distinctive cool-climate wines. Lake Barrington Vineyard is the closest option, followed by Motton Terraces, Tiger Ranch Wines, and Barringwood further south. White Rock Vineyard and Prickly Mo extend the options for those with time to explore the region's wine producers.

Pubs & Dining

The Mole Creek Hotel serves as the closest pub option near the karst national park. Further south, Bischoff Hotel, Rosebery Top Pub, and Rosebery RSL provide local hospitality and meal options. For craft beer, Seven Sheds Brewery features a beer garden, and Island State Brewing: The Pier offers waterfront dining with local brews.
