History & Significance

Flinders Island served as a prison settlement in the 1830s–1840s, with the Wybalenna Aboriginal establishment housing Indigenous Australians removed from mainland Tasmania — a site of profound tragedy and cultural significance. The island was named after explorer Matthew Flinders. Today it remains a remote, wild destination with a small permanent community, largely untouched by development.
