Adventure Bay Beach sits on the eastern shore of Bruny Island, about 50 kilometres south of Hobart. Reached via a 20-minute car ferry crossing from Kettering, the beach offers calm, sheltered swimming in a setting that carries genuine historical weight - this bay was a landing point for some of the most significant European voyages of the 18th century.

The bay's protected aspect means the water stays relatively settled, making it a practical choice for families, young children, and swimmers who prefer to avoid ocean swell. It's a straightforward, unfussy beach with free parking and easy access to the sand.

History

Adventure Bay's place in Australian history is well established. Captain James Cook stopped here during his voyages, and William Bligh - later of Bounty fame - also landed at the bay. These visits made Adventure Bay one of the better-documented early European contact points on the Tasmanian coastline. Today the bay remains central to Bruny Island's coastal identity and its small local community, though there's nothing performative about it - the history is simply part of the place.

What to See and Do

The beach itself is the main draw. The sheltered conditions suit swimming at most tide stages, and the calm water means younger children can wade without much concern about unpredictable waves.

At low tide, rock pools around the bay are worth exploring - check tide times before you head out to make the most of these. The surrounding bushland has walking tracks if you want to stretch your legs beyond the sand, though you'll want to come prepared with your own water and snacks, as there are no food vendors on-site.

Getting There and Access

Adventure Bay is on Bruny Island, which requires a ferry crossing from Kettering - roughly 20 minutes on the water. Kettering is about 35 kilometres south of Hobart via the Huon Highway, making the total journey from the city around 50 kilometres before you board the ferry.

The beach is pram-friendly, and accessible parking is available near the main beach access point. Parking is free throughout.

Visitor Tips

  • BYO everything: There are no cafes or food vendors at the beach. A picnic area is available, so bringing your own food and drinks is the way to go.
  • Shade is limited: Pack sun protection - hat, sunscreen, and your own shelter if you plan to spend a full day.
  • Arrive early in summer: Parking capacity is limited. On weekends and during school holidays it fills up, so morning arrivals fare best.
  • Check the tides: Low tide opens up the rock pools; it's worth timing your visit if that's of interest.

Best Time to Visit

December through March offers the warmest water and most reliable weather for swimming. Weekday visits are generally quieter, and mornings tend to be less crowded regardless of the day. If you're travelling during the summer school holidays, earlier in the day will give you a better chance of finding a park.
