About Hobart International Airport

Tasmania's main gateway — entry point for Cradle Mountain, Freycinet, MONA and the Tasmanian wilderness. Single compact terminal with limited international services.

Getting There

By shuttle

Hobart Airporter shuttles to CBD hotels. 25 minutes, $20 one-way — pre-book online. Best value for solo travellers and couples.

By car

Tasman Highway connects directly to Hobart CBD (17 km, 25 minutes). Drop-off zones at the terminal entrance.

By taxi & rideshare

Taxi to CBD: $45–$55, 25 minutes. Uber available — pickup zone outside arrivals.

Hire car essential

Tasmania is best toured by road — most travellers hire a car at the airport. Major brands all operate from the terminal. Allow extra time at booking for Tasmanian biosecurity inspection of vehicles brought from interstate via the Spirit of Tasmania ferry.

Transfers

**Single combined terminal** — international and domestic share the compact building with separate screening. Walks between gates under 5 minutes. **International services limited** (mainly seasonal Air NZ); transfers usually quick.

Parking

**Short-stay** at terminal: $5 first 30 min. **Long-stay** car park: from $14/day, $80/week. Cheaper than mainland capital airports.

Visitor Tips

  • Tasmania has its own biosecurity regime — even interstate travellers must declare fresh produce, honey and used outdoor gear
  • Detector dogs operate at domestic arrivals (unique to TAS)
  • Limited international services — mostly seasonal Air NZ direct from Auckland
  • No 24-hour staffing; international flights typically 06:00-22:00
  • Hire car essential for any trip beyond Hobart — Tasmania is best toured by road

International arrivals — biosecurity

Australia has strict biosecurity laws. Declare all food, plant material, animal products, soil, wooden items, and outdoor equipment on your Incoming Passenger Card. Fines start at AUD $626 and undeclared prohibited items can result in penalties up to $660,000 or visa cancellation. When in doubt, declare it.

Specific to Hobart International Airport

Hobart is Tasmania's main gateway — entry point for Cradle Mountain, Freycinet, MONA, and the Tasmanian wilderness. The biosecurity story here is unique to Tasmania.

Single combined terminal

International and domestic share one compact building. Walks between gates under 5 minutes. International services are limited (mainly seasonal direct flights to NZ via Air NZ; charter routes).

SmartGate at international zone

Available for eligible ePassport holders during international flight operations. Limited international traffic means short queues — usually clear in 15 minutes.

Limited overnight operations

No 24-hour staffing. International services typically scheduled 06:00–22:00 only. Late-evening arrivals from mainland AU mean very limited transport options to Hobart city — taxi or pre-booked shuttle only after 23:00.

Tasmania's unique biosecurity

This is the critical difference for travellers. Tasmania has its own biosecurity regime in addition to federal rules. Even passengers arriving on domestic flights from mainland Australia must declare fresh fruit, vegetables, honey, plants, and used outdoor equipment. Detector dogs operate at domestic arrivals — penalties apply on the spot.

If you are bringing camping gear, hiking boots, or fishing equipment from interstate, declare and clean before travelling. TAS biosecurity targets exotic seeds in mud, honey bees in equipment, and certain plant pathogens.

Best landing approach for views

Approaches from the north offer left-side window views of Mount Wellington, the Derwent River, and Hobart's waterfront — particularly striking with autumn colours (April–May).

Onward travel

Hobart Airporter shuttle to CBD: 25 min, $20. Taxi: 25 min, $45–55. Hire car essential for any trip beyond the city — Tasmania is best toured by road.
