Carnarvon Gorge is a 30-kilometre sandstone gorge carved by Carnarvon Creek over millions of years through the Great Dividing Range. The gorge holds exceptional cultural significance as home to one of Australia's most concentrated collections of Aboriginal rock art, with ochre stencils, engravings, and paintings dating back thousands of years. The site was gazetted as a national park in 1932 and remains a vital place for understanding Indigenous Australian artistic and spiritual heritage.

Getting There

Map of Carnarvon Gorge

Located 700 km north-west of Brisbane. Drive via Rolleston on the Carnarvon Highway or via Roma on the Carnarvon Developmental Road. The last 40 km to the gorge are unsealed but generally suitable for 2WD in dry conditions.

Parking

Free parking available at the main visitor area near the ranger station. Capacity adequate for day visitors and caravan/camper vehicles. Overflow parking available during peak periods. Accessible parking near facilities and main walking tracks.

Visitor Tips

  • Allow at least two full days to walk the main gorge track (9.6 km each way). Book campsites well in advance as they fill months ahead for peak season. Carry plenty of water and wear ankle-supporting footwear for the creek crossings.
