History & Significance
Mount Sonder (1380 m) is a prominent peak in the West MacDonnell Ranges, part of the ancient mountain range that defines central Australia's landscape. The lookout has become a popular photography destination for its panoramic views across the MacDonnell Ranges
Getting There
Located in the West MacDonnell Ranges near Alice Springs, approximately 25 km west of town via Larapinta Drive. Accessible by sealed road to the carpark; standard 2WD suitable
Parking
Free carpark at the base of the walk. Limited spaces (approximately 15β20 vehicles). No dedicated accessible parking; standard carpark access. Overflow parking available on adjacent verges during busy periods
Visitor Tips
- β’Start the walk early morning for best light and cooler temperatures
- β’Bring plenty of water β there's no shade on the exposed ridge
- β’Wear sturdy walking boots for rocky terrain
- β’Bring a hat and sunscreen; UV exposure is intense
