History & Significance

Gunlom Falls, known by its Indigenous name Yurmikmik, holds cultural significance within Kakadu National Park's landscapes. The site has been important to the Bininj/Mungguy people for thousands of years. Today it remains one of the most prized swimming and scenic destinations in the Top End, attracting visitors for its natural rock pools and escarpment views.

Getting There

From the Kakadu Highway at Cooinda, head south 37km to the Gunlom turnoff, then 38km on unsealed 4WD track. Total 75km from Cooinda.

Parking

Unsealed parking area at trailhead; capacity limited; free parking included with Kakadu entry pass. 4WD vehicle required to access the falls road, particularly during wet season transition periods.

Visitor Tips

  • The top pools at sunset are possibly the best experience in all of Kakadu
  • Stay at the Gunlom campsite overnight to have the pools at dawn before tour groups arrive
  • 4WD essential — the track has deep sand sections and water crossings
  • The lower pool is the better swimming option — the top pools are shallow
