Best Time to Visit

Great Southern harvest typically runs March to April. The region experiences mild summers (December to February) and cool winters. Autumn (March to May) offers ideal touring weather and harvest activity. October to November brings spring wildflowers. Summer months can be warmer; avoid peak holiday periods for a quieter experience.

Forest Hill Vineyard holds a significant place in Western Australian wine history. Established in 1966, it stands among the earliest vineyards planted in the Great Southern region, predating the wave of interest that would eventually establish this part of WA as one of the country's most respected cool-climate wine areas. Nearly six decades on, the vineyard continues to produce wines from the varieties that made its reputation — Riesling, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Wines

The three varieties grown at Forest Hill reflect both the strengths of the site and the character of the Great Southern region. Riesling and Chardonnay are particular standouts here, benefiting from the cool temperatures and maritime influence that define the climate. These conditions allow grapes to ripen slowly, building complexity while retaining the natural acidity that makes Great Southern wines well-suited to ageing.

Cabernet Sauvignon rounds out the range, drawing on the region's well-drained gravelly loam and sandy loam soils to produce structured, savoury reds that hold their shape over time.

The Vineyard

Mount Barker sits at the northern edge of the Great Southern, roughly 350 kilometres south of Perth. The rolling hills and varied soils — a mix of gravelly loam and sandy loam — contribute to the site's suitability for cool-climate viticulture. Summers are mild, winters are cool, and the maritime influence from the Southern Ocean tempers extremes across the growing season. It's a landscape well suited to producing wines with finesse rather than weight.

Cellar Door Experience

The cellar door at Forest Hill offers tastings, tours, and a wine shop, giving visitors a thorough introduction to the range. Whether you're working through a structured tasting or browsing bottles to take home, the setup accommodates different levels of engagement with the wines.

Getting There

Visitor Tips
