Sanguine Estate sits on Shurans Lane in Heathcote, about two hours north of Melbourne, with 55 acres devoted almost entirely to Shiraz. It's a focused operation — one region, one primary variety — and the cellar door experience reflects that clarity of purpose.
The Wines
Shiraz is the heart of Sanguine Estate, with 55 acres planted to the variety across the property. Heathcote's warm climate and the region's distinctive Cambrian soil are well regarded for producing Shiraz with depth and structure, and the estate leans fully into that strength.
Alongside the Shiraz program, five acres are given over to experimental varietals — small-batch wines that reflect the winery's interest in testing what else the site can produce. These aren't core to the range, but they're worth asking about when you visit.
Cellar Door Experience
The cellar door is open on weekends from 10am to 5pm. The experience is casual and unhurried — you can taste through the Shiraz range, pick up bottles from the on-site wine shop, and have a direct conversation with staff about how the wines are made and where the experimental program is heading.
It's the kind of cellar door where you can ask questions and get genuine answers rather than a rehearsed pitch.
Getting There
From Melbourne, head north on the Hume Freeway before turning onto the Heathcote-Tooborac Road into Heathcote. The estate is located on Shurans Lane. The drive takes roughly two hours depending on traffic. Check the Sanguine Estate website for precise directions and any information about access for caravans or larger vehicles.
Visitor Tips
- Sanguine Estate is only open on Saturdays and Sundays, so plan accordingly if you're travelling from Melbourne
- The cellar door is a good starting point for a broader Heathcote day trip — multiple other producers are within short driving distance
- Ask staff specifically about the experimental varietals; availability may be limited and they offer a different perspective on what the estate is exploring
- Autumn (late February through April) is harvest season and tends to be the most engaging time to visit; spring (September–October) also offers good weather for the region
- Weekdays are quieter across Heathcote generally, but Sanguine Estate's cellar door is only open on weekends — factor that in when planning
