About Castlemaine & the Central Goldfields

Castlemaine sits at the heart of Victoria's Central Goldfields, a region shaped by the 1850s gold rush and now known for its well-preserved heritage, productive vineyards, and network of scenic walking trails. The landscape combines forested gullies, open heathland, and rolling farmland, making it ideal for caravanners and 4WD tourers exploring inland Victoria.

The area offers more than a dozen walking tracks within 10km. Close to the visitor area, Pete's Track and Oak Avenue provide short walks, while Archdeacon's Pass, Kalimna Circuit Track, and Campbells Creek trail suit half-day outings. Historic walking routes include the Castlemaine–Maryborough Line and the scenic Water race, which follows an old goldfields water channel.
