Best Time to Visit
Vintage season (March–April) offers the most vibrant cellar door experience with harvest activity and special events. Spring (September–November) and autumn (February–April) provide pleasant weather and fewer crowds. December–January can be busy with holiday visitors. Winter (June–August) is quieter but offers excellent wine appreciation conditions.

One of the Mornington Peninsula's founding producers, Crittenden Estate has been growing and crafting cool-climate wines at Dromana since 1982. That's more than four decades of working with the peninsula's distinctive maritime conditions — long before the region became the recognised wine destination it is today. The estate remains family-owned and continues to focus on the varieties that suit this part of Victoria best.
The Wines
Crittenden Estate's focus lands squarely on three varieties: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sangiovese. The first two are natural fits for the Mornington Peninsula — the cool, drawn-out growing season and maritime air produce wines with genuine structure and acidity rather than the softer, fruit-forward styles you'd find in warmer inland regions.
The Sangiovese is worth particular attention. An Italian variety more commonly associated with Tuscany, it's not something you see everywhere on the peninsula, and Crittenden's commitment to it speaks to a willingness to explore what the terroir can do beyond the flagship varieties.
The Vineyard
The Mornington Peninsula sits between Port Phillip Bay and Western Port, and the cooling influence of those surrounding waters shapes everything about how grapes ripen here. The peninsula's elevation adds another moderating layer, slowing the growing season and allowing flavour development to keep pace with natural acidity.
Soils across the property contribute to the complexity in the wines — the combination of maritime influence and distinctive soil composition is what the region has built its reputation on, and Crittenden has been working with these conditions longer than most.
Cellar Door Experience
The cellar door at Dromana operates as a relaxed, family-run space where you can taste the estate's range and purchase wines directly. Guided vineyard tours are also available for those who want a more in-depth look at the winemaking operation and how the vineyard is managed through the season.
Tasting fees, tour availability, and booking requirements are best confirmed directly with the estate before you visit — details can change seasonally, and tours in particular are worth arranging ahead of time.
Getting There
Crittenden Estate is around 60 kilometres south-east of Melbourne, accessible via the Mornington Peninsula Freeway. Allow between one and one-and-a-half hours from the CBD depending on traffic. The winery is caravan-friendly with good road access, though it's worth noting that some roads on the peninsula become narrow and winding once you leave the main freeway route.
Visitor Tips
- Book tours in advance. Vineyard tours are guided and likely limited in availability — confirm when you contact the estate.
- Time your visit for vintage. March and April bring harvest activity to the cellar door and a more energetic atmosphere across the peninsula generally.
- Spring and autumn are ideal. September through November and February through April offer good weather with fewer visitors than the summer holiday peak.
- Plan a peninsula run. Crittenden sits within easy reach of numerous other cellar doors — the Mornington Peninsula's wineries cluster well, making it straightforward to visit several in a day.
- Use the wine shop. The cellar door stocks the full range, so if you taste something you want to take home, you can buy it on the spot.
