margan.com.auMargan Wines sits in Broke, one of the Hunter Valley's most respected subregions, about two hours north of Sydney. Established in 1996 on former agricultural land, it has built a reputation around the varieties that define the Hunter Valley — Semillon and Shiraz — while carving out a point of difference with Barbera, an Italian variety rarely seen in the region.
The Wines
Semillon is the standout at Margan, as it is across much of the Hunter Valley. The Broke subregion's warm days and cool nights suit the variety well, producing wines that are tight and restrained in youth but capable of developing considerable complexity with bottle age. Shiraz benefits from elevated terrain and well-drained soils, delivering wines that reflect the Hunter's distinctive character rather than the denser, fruit-forward styles found in warmer Australian regions.
Barbera is the most unusual entry in the Margan portfolio, and it's worth paying attention to. While the variety has centuries of history in northern Italy, it remains rare in Australian wine country. Margan's commitment to growing it in the Hunter adds an interesting dimension to any tasting — it's a useful reminder that the region's identity extends beyond its two flagship varieties.
Cellar Door Experience
The cellar door has a contemporary, relaxed atmosphere with vineyard views, and the range of varieties gives tastings some genuine breadth. You can move through the Semillon and Shiraz alongside the Barbera, which makes for a tasting that covers both the classic Hunter Valley styles and something less familiar.
Tasting fees and booking requirements can change seasonally, so it's worth checking the website or contacting the winery before you visit, especially if you're bringing a group.
Food and Dining
There's an on-site restaurant serving modern Australian cuisine, with the menu designed to work alongside Margan's wine range. Tables look out over the vineyard, and it's a comfortable setting for a longer lunch. If you're planning to dine, booking ahead is strongly recommended — the restaurant is popular, particularly on weekends and during peak season.
For more casual options or group visits, enquire directly with the winery about platters or group menus.
History
Margan was founded in 1996, when vineyards were established on land that had previously been used for other agricultural purposes. Over the decades since, the winery has developed a clear identity centred on cool-climate Hunter Valley expressions, and its early adoption of Barbera has become one of its distinguishing features in the region.
Getting There
Broke sits roughly two hours north of Sydney and about 30 minutes from Newcastle, making Margan accessible as either a day trip from Sydney or a shorter drive from the Hunter's main township of Cessnock. The winery is on Margan Road in Broke. There's no direct public transport to the cellar door, so a car is the practical option. If you're travelling by caravan, parking is available, though it's worth confirming capacity in advance by contacting the winery directly.
