About This Wine Trail

The Yarra Valley is Victoria's most accessible cool-climate wine region, sitting just an hour east of Melbourne amid rolling green hills and fern gullies. It's best known for elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with 126 wineries spread across towns like Coldstream, Healesville, and Yarra Glen.

## Yarra Valley Wine Trail Just an hour's drive from Melbourne's CBD, the Yarra Valley offers one of Victoria's most rewarding wine trail experiences. Nestled in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range, this cool-climate region produces wines of genuine finesse — particularly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay — alongside excellent sparkling wines, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon. With 126 wineries spread across a patchwork of valleys and hillsides, there's enough here to fill a long weekend or a leisurely week-long stay. ## The Wines The Yarra Valley's cool, wet winters and mild summers create ideal conditions for varieties that thrive with a long, slow growing season. **Pinot Noir** is the region's signature red — expect savoury, medium-bodied styles with red cherry, spice, and earthy complexity rather than the jammy fruit of warmer regions. **Chardonnay** here tends toward restraint: think stone fruit, citrus, and subtle oak rather than butter and vanilla. Sparkling wine has a strong presence in the valley, with Domaine Chandon — the Australian arm of Moët & Chandon — producing méthode traditionnelle wines at Coldstream. Prosecco is also grown in the region, reflecting broader Victorian trends. For reds beyond Pinot, look for cooler-climate expressions of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon from producers in Dixons Creek and Seville. ## Key Wineries **Yering Station** in Yering is one of the valley's oldest and most picturesque properties, with a heritage bluestone winery, a solid restaurant, and a broad range of estate wines. It's a logical first stop on any trail. **De Bortoli Yarra Valley** at Dixons Creek is a well-organised operation with a popular restaurant and a range that spans from approachable everyday drinking wines to serious single-vineyard releases. Families are well catered for here. **Domaine Chandon** in Coldstream is essential for sparkling wine lovers. Free guided tours explain the méthode traditionnelle process, and the cellar door offers a smart tasting experience in a modern building with views across the vineyard. **TarraWarra Estate** near Healesville is worth visiting for both the wine and the art — the property houses a respected contemporary art museum alongside its cellar door and restaurant. Their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are consistently among the region's best. **Oakridge Wines** and **Coldstream Hills** (founded by wine critic James Halliday) are both strong choices in Coldstream for serious wine enthusiasts, offering well-regarded Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in a more focused tasting environment. **Innocent Bystander** in Healesville combines a relaxed cellar door with a bustling restaurant and is one of the more family-friendly stops on the trail. Their Moscato and Prosecco are perennial crowd-pleasers. For a special occasion, **Levantine Hill** in Coldstream delivers a polished, appointment-style experience, while **Zonzo Estate** in Yarra Glen is popular for its wood-fired pizzas and relaxed outdoor setting. ## Food and the Visitor Experience Nine wineries along the trail have on-site restaurants, which makes the Yarra Valley an easy region to plan around food as well as wine. Options range from relaxed café-style lunches to full à la carte dining. The broader region also offers excellent produce — the Yarra Valley Dairy at Yering and the Healesville Sanctuary (a wildlife park featuring native Australian animals) make worthwhile additions to any itinerary, particularly for families travelling with children. The towns of Healesville and Yarra Glen both have independent cafés, bakeries, and small shops worth exploring between cellar doors. ## Getting Around The main wine trail routes fan out from the Maroondah Highway and Healesville–Kinglake Road. Most cellar doors are signposted from these main roads. The terrain is hilly in parts, but the roads are sealed and well-maintained — suitable for caravans and campervans, though some estate driveways are narrow. Designated driver arrangements or booking a guided wine tour from Melbourne or locally are worth considering if you plan to taste widely.

Best Time to Visit

Autumn (March to May) is ideal — harvest activity, cooler days, and vivid foliage make it the region's most atmospheric season. Spring (September to November) is also excellent, with wildflowers and mild weather. Summer weekends can be busy, particularly at popular cellar doors. Winter is quiet but many cellar doors remain open, and the cool green landscape has its own appeal.

Getting There

The Yarra Valley is approximately 50–65 km east of Melbourne's CBD, depending on your destination within the region. The most direct route is via the Maroondah Highway (B360) through Lilydale, which feeds into the heart of the wine trail around Coldstream and Healesville. Alternatively, the Warburton Highway provides access to the southern parts of the region through Seville. Public transport options include the Lilydale train line plus local bus connections to Healesville, though a car or hire vehicle is far more practical for visiting multiple wineries.

Visitor Tips

• Designate a driver or book a guided tour — even modest tastings add up across a day of cellar doors. • Many cellar doors are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays; check opening days before planning your route. • Book restaurant tables in advance, especially at TarraWarra, De Bortoli, and Yering Station on weekends. • Caravan and campervan travellers will find some estate driveways tight — park on the roadside where signage permits. • Pick up a regional wine trail map from the Healesville or Yarra Glen visitor information points to plan your day. • Combine the wine trail with a morning visit to Healesville Sanctuary if travelling with children.
