Yarra Yering winery in Gruyere, VIC

Yarra Yering sits quietly at the serious end of the Yarra Valley's winemaking spectrum. Established in 1969 by Dr Bailey Carrodus, it's one of the region's oldest and most respected producers — a place where the focus has always been firmly on what ends up in the bottle rather than what's on offer in the tasting room.

Located on Briarty Road in Gruyere, about 50 kilometres north-east of Melbourne, this is a working vineyard first and a visitor destination second. If you're after polished hospitality and a gift shop, look elsewhere. If you want direct engagement with serious wine in an authentic winery setting, Yarra Yering is worth the effort of planning around.

History

Dr Bailey Carrodus planted the first vines here at a time when the Yarra Valley's reputation as a fine wine region was still finding its footing. His commitment to cool-climate viticulture and low-intervention winemaking — experimental for the era — helped lay the groundwork for what the valley has become. Carrodus spent decades refining his approach, and the winery's influence on subsequent generations of Yarra Valley vignerons has been considerable. That founding philosophy of quality over commercial convenience continues to shape how Yarra Yering operates today.

The Wines

The vineyard occupies elevated ground with predominantly volcanic, well-drained soils — conditions that produce wines with structure, elegance, and genuine ageing potential. Cool nights and moderate days through the growing season are the defining climatic characteristics here, and they show clearly in the wines.

Signature varieties include Pinot Noir, Shiraz, and Cabernet-based blends. These are cool-climate expressions with restraint and complexity rather than weight and fruit-forwardness. Yarra Yering's wines are regarded as highly collectible, and if you're visiting, it's worth asking about current release details and any allocation opportunities direct from the cellar door.

Cellar Door Experience

Don't arrive unannounced. Yarra Yering operates on a reserved, by-appointment basis for groups, and walk-in visitors should contact ahead to confirm current tasting formats and availability. The atmosphere is intimate and straightforward — you're in a working vineyard environment, likely speaking with winemaking staff rather than a hospitality team. That directness is part of the appeal for wine-focused visitors, but it does mean the experience suits those who've done a little planning.

There's no food service on-site, so bring a picnic if you plan to spend time in the area, or factor in a stop at one of the dining options in Gruyere or elsewhere in the Yarra Valley.

Getting There

From Melbourne, head out via the Maroondah Highway towards Healesville, then follow local signage to Briarty Road in Gruyere. The drive takes around an hour depending on traffic. Standard road access applies, and caravans can make the trip, though parking on-site is limited and tight — contact ahead if you're travelling with a caravan to confirm access. There's no public transport to the cellar door and no dedicated coach parking.

Visitor Tips

  • Call before you visit. This isn't a casual drop-in destination. Confirm tasting availability and format, especially if you're coming in a group.
  • Visit during vintage (March–April) if you want to see the winery in full working mode — it adds a layer of authenticity to the visit.
  • Cool-season touring (May–September) offers clear weather and a quieter experience. Avoid peak summer weekends if you're after a more relaxed atmosphere.
  • Ask about wine releases and allocations at the cellar door — Yarra Yering wines are in demand, and a direct conversation with winemaking staff is a good opportunity.
  • Bring your own food. There's no on-site dining, so pack a picnic or plan a meal nearby.
  • Build a touring route. Gruyere and the surrounding Yarra Valley have plenty of other cellar doors worth combining into a day or weekend itinerary.
