About the Perth Hills Zig Zag Kalamunda Loop

55km Perth Hills loop via the Zig Zag, Kalamunda and Mundaring - WA's premier road ride with sweeping Perth city views.

The Kalamunda Loop is Perth's signature road ride - a 55km circuit climbing the Darling Scarp via the famous Zig Zag (or Welshpool Road East) and traversing the Perth Hills through Kalamunda, Mundaring and Bickley. Total elevation gain is around 900m. The Zig Zag itself is a tight 2.3km switchback climb at 6.5% that ascends the scarp face from Gooseberry Hill - one of the most photographed climbs in Western Australia, with three 180-degree hairpins and panoramic views back over Perth and the Swan River.

From the top of the Zig Zag the route traverses Kalamunda's leafy ridges through Pickering Brook, Mundaring (location of the historic Mundaring Weir) and Bickley before descending back to the coastal plain via Welshpool Road. The roads are mostly wide and well-paved; traffic is moderate.

Kalamunda Village is the unofficial cycling hub with several cafes (Cinque Espresso, Pure Espresso) and a strong local club. Mundaring Weir Hotel sits picturesquely beside the dam and is a traditional lunch stop.

Gradient profile — Avg gradient: 1.6%, Max gradient: 9%.
