About This Trail

110km classic Yarra Ranges loop through Reefton Spur and Marysville - Victoria's most beloved big-day-out road ride with 1,800m of climbing. The Reefton-Marysville Loop (often called 'the Reefton') is the iconic 'serious cyclist' ride out of Melbourne's east. The standard route runs Lilydale-Warburton-Reefton Spur-Cumberland Junction-Marysville-Black Spur-Healesville-Lilydale, totalling around 110km with 1,800m of elevation gain. The two anchor climbs are Reefton Spur (28km at 2.1%, but with several 7-8% pinches) and the Black Spur descent (a flowing 8km drop through the world's tallest hardwoods). The loop's character is defined by mountain-ash giants, fern gullies and the cool mountain air of the Great Dividing Range. Reefton Spur is one of the most beautiful climbs in Australia - long, never-too-steep, with the canopy closing overhead and frequent ferny stream crossings. Marysville (rebuilt after the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires) sits at the halfway point and is the obligatory lunch stop. From Marysville the route returns west via the Black Spur, a 6km descent through 80m-tall mountain ash that is one of Victoria's defining drives. Gradient profile — Avg gradient: 1.6%, Max gradient: 10%.

Warnings

Cold above 600m year-round; winter frost/fog on Reefton; long ride - carry food/water.
