About This Trail
One of Victoria’s longest rail trails at 134km, the Great Victorian traverses undulating farmland from the Goulburn River at Tallarook and Yea up to the High Country. Features the Cheviot Tunnel and Bonnie Doon bridge across Lake Eildon. The central section has been affected by the Jan 2026 bushfires. Cheviot Tunnel is open but the Cheviot Tunnel to Alexandra and Merton sections of the trail are closed indefinitely. Access to these sections is dangerous to you and any first responders who may be required to assist you. For further information and ongoing updates please refer to the following FAQs on the GVRT site. The surface is either a type of compacted gravel or granitic sand in sections that are shared by walkers, cyclists and horses. Arrows mark the turn-offs where there is a dedicated bridle path. There are several crossings of major rural highways but there are also two underpasses of them. This trail was a pioneer in adding sculptures to rail trails. Consisting of seven large art installations and 20 smaller works along the length of the trail, Art of the GVRT was launched in 2023. Scar trees can also be seen; more information can be found here. Trail users are encouraged to stop and interact with each sculpture and learn more about the history and heritage of the region.
