About This Trail

Australia's largest lift-served gravity bike park with 820m of vertical descent and over 70 trails, set in Tasmania's Derwent Valley. Maydena Bike Park is Australia's premier gravity-focused mountain bike destination — a privately operated, shuttle-served park built into the flank of Mount Mueller in the upper Derwent Valley, about 90 minutes drive west of Hobart. With 820 metres of vertical descent from peak to valley floor it offers the largest lift-accessed (shuttle-served) gravity drop on the continent and one of the largest in the southern hemisphere. The park has more than 70 marked descending trails spread across an enormous fan of terrain, ranging from beginner green flow lines on the lower mountain through to true expert double-black tracks with road-gap jumps, rock chutes and high-consequence steeps. Iconic trails include Mt Mayhem (a 7km top-to-bottom flow descent), Hellfire (loose, raw, technical), Lost in the Woods, Eagle and the freeride zones with massive sender lines used in events like Red Bull Hardline Tasmania, which Maydena hosted from 2024. Unlike most Australian MTB destinations, Maydena operates as a true bike park: riders buy a day pass or multi-day pass, board uplift buses (no chairlift — purpose-built shuttle vehicles run continuously), and lap descents all day. There is no significant pedalling required. The park typically operates Wednesday to Sunday in season, with extended hours in summer school holidays. A skills park, pump track and dedicated beginner zone serve newer riders, and the park runs coaching programs and women's-specific clinics. Facilities at the base include a cafe, bar, bike shop, full-suspension and downhill bike hire (including kids' sizes and e-MTB), a wash bay, secure storage and gear rental for full-face helmets and body armour. Accommodation in Maydena village itself is limited — most riders stay in the village's pub-style and self-contained options or commute from New Norfolk or Hobart. Major events, EWS qualifiers and Hardline have driven a steady expansion of on-site infrastructure. The park is best ridden October through April. Winter operations are reduced and can be affected by snow on the upper mountain. Maydena suits intermediate to expert riders most strongly, though the green zone genuinely accommodates first-timers with hire bikes and lessons. Body armour and full-face helmets are strongly recommended and available for hire.

Warnings

Day pass required - not a free network. Many trails are expert-only with significant jumps and drops. Full-face helmet and body armour strongly recommended. Limited operations in winter.
