Mount Field National Park - Mount Field Visitor Centre

Mount Field, Tasmania

About Mount Field & Tasmania's Central Highlands

Mount Field National Park protects one of Tasmania's most accessible stretches of cool temperate rainforest, nestled in the Central Highlands between Hobart and the south-west wilderness. The park is defined by its network of short, well-maintained walks that lead to spectacular waterfalls and tall eucalypt stands, making it ideal for caravanners and day-trippers seeking quality walks without serious elevation gain.

Walks & Trails

The park's signature walks cluster around the visitor centre and lower valleys. Russell Falls is the most popular, a 1.4km easy walk through fern gully to a dramatic 43-metre cascade. Nearby, Tall Trees Walk winds through towering mountain ash and blackwood, while Lady Barron Falls Track offers another easy waterfall walk 2km from the centre. For a longer loop, Three Falls Circuit (6km, moderate) connects Russell, Horseshoe, and Lady Barron falls in one walk. Beatties Tarn Track (7km) climbs to an alpine lakeside viewpoint, while Sharpes Falls Track (4km, moderate) rewards with a remote waterfall and mountain views.

Camping

Mount Field Campground sits at the park entrance, offering on-site caravan facilities close to all major walks. For overflow or alternative bases, Left of Field, Camping Gardens is 1km away, while Bethune Park Camping Area (17km) and sites further afield in the Ouse Valley provide additional options for touring groups.

Attractions & Things to See

Mount Field National Park itself is the primary draw, home to Russell Falls, Horseshoe Falls, and Lady Barron Falls. These waterfalls range from accessible rainforest cascades to dramatic multi-tiered falls, each viewable via short walks. Abbotts Hill (20km) offers broader landscape views across the Ouse Valley.

Wineries & Cellar Doors

The Ouse Valley and surrounding regions host several cool-climate producers worth a detour. Kinvarra Estate (24km) and Ouse River Wines (29km) are the closest; further south, Stefano Lubiana (44km), Derwent Estate Wines (46km), Broadview Estate (46km), and Winstead (50km) showcase Tasmanian cool-climate styles.

Golf

Ouse Golf Course (22km) provides a scenic, manageable round in the valley, while Kingston Beach Golf Course (82km) is accessible for those heading toward Hobart.

Pubs & Dining

Lachlan Hotel (22km) serves the Ouse Valley community. Further afield, New Norfolk Hotel (39km) and The Valley Sports Bar (38km) offer bistro meals and local atmosphere, while Welcome Swallow Brewery (40km) showcases local beer in New Norfolk.
