About the Thredbo Valley MTB
Australia's highest lift-served bike park with 50+ trails plus the 35km Thredbo Valley Track, set in Kosciuszko National Park.
Thredbo, the alpine resort village in New South Wales' Snowy Mountains, hosts the highest-elevation lift-served mountain bike park in Australia and one of the most spectacular trail networks on the continent. Operating from late November through to the start of the snow season in early June, Thredbo Bike Park combines the year-round Kosciuszko Express chairlift uplift with a network of gravity-focused trails on the resort plus the magnificent Thredbo Valley Track that winds 35 kilometres down the Thredbo River.
The lift-served bike park has more than 50 trails graded from green flow lines through to expert double-black descents, with a top elevation of 1,930 metres at the Eagles Nest chairlift terminus. From the top, riders descend through alpine herb fields, snow-gum forest and granite tors with views across the Main Range and to Mt Kosciuszko. Hero trails include the Kosciuszko Flow Trail (a beginner-to-intermediate flow descent), the All Mountain trail, Cannonball Run (the legendary downhill course used for the Cannonball MTB Festival), Wallaby and Crankenstein. The park hosted UCI World Cup downhill rounds in the 1990s and has built a strong domestic event scene since.
Separate from the lift-served bike park is the Thredbo Valley Track — a 35-kilometre point-to-point cross-country trail running from Thredbo village down through Kosciuszko National Park to Lake Crackenback Resort and on to Bullocks Flat. Mostly downhill with rolling sections, it crosses suspension bridges over the Thredbo River, passes through tall snow-gum forest and is regarded as one of the great Australian XC backcountry rides. It is suitable for intermediate riders and is frequently shuttled.
Thredbo Village offers full alpine resort facilities — bike hire including downhill and e-MTB, multiple cafes, restaurants and bars, ski lodges and apartment accommodation (which transitions to summer use), bike shops and wash facilities. Day passes are required for the chairlift; the Valley Track and trails outside the bike park are free to ride. Accommodation is also available at Lake Crackenback Resort (lower elevation, milder climate) and in Jindabyne, the larger town 30 minutes east.
Thredbo's high elevation means cool summers (often 5-15°C cooler than Sydney), occasional summer snowfalls, and rapid weather changes. The bike park typically closes by early June for the ski season. Best ridden December through April. The combination of altitude, alpine terrain and chairlift uplift makes Thredbo unique among Australian MTB destinations.
