History & Significance
Chambers Pillar is a distinctive quartzite rock formation that has served as a landmark for travellers in central Australia for centuries. It holds significance for the Arrernte people and has been an important navigation point for explorers and pastoralists. The site is named after James Chambers, an early pastoralist.

Getting There
Located south of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. Access via Ross Highway, then south towards Finke Gorge area. Approximately 50km south of Alice Springs. High-clearance 4WD vehicle recommended, especially in wet season. No public transport available.
Parking
Minimal parking available at the base—informal parking area for a handful of vehicles. High-clearance 4WD recommended for final access. No sealed facilities or organised car park.
Visitor Tips
- •Arrive early morning for best light and cooler temperatures
- •Bring plenty of water—it's remote with no facilities
- •The walk to the pillar is moderate; wear sturdy shoes
- •Photography is excellent at sunrise and sunset
- •Check road conditions before travelling—access can be rough after rain
