History & Significance

The SievX Memorial commemorates the sinking of the SIEV X (Suspected Illegal Entry Vessel X) on 19 October 2001, when an overcrowded Indonesian fishing boat capsized in the Indian Ocean, killing 353 asylum seekers, mostly women and children. The memorial, installed in Barangaroo Reserve, serves as a site of remembrance for one of Australia's deadliest maritime disasters. It includes a sculptural installation and plaques honouring the victims.
