History & Significance
Channel Island Leprosarium was established in the late 1800s as an isolation facility for leprosy patients in the Northern Territory. The site reflects the historical practice of isolating people with Hansen's disease away from populated areas. The ruins visible today are remnants of the institutional buildings that once operated there. It represents an important but difficult chapter in Australian medical and social history.
