About Buchan Caves

Buchan Caves is a system of more than 400 caves and caverns in the limestone hills of East Gippsland, of which two β€” Royal Cave and Fairy Cave β€” are open for regular guided tours. The caves feature extraordinary formations including stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, and cave coral accumulated over millions of years. The surrounding reserve is also home to kangaroos, wallabies, and birdlife.

Getting There

Buchan is 380km east of Melbourne via the Princes Highway (M1) to Bairnsdale, then north on the Buchan Road through Nowa Nowa. Caves reserve is at the edge of Buchan township.

Visitor Tips

  • β€’Book tours online ahead of time, especially in summer. Do both Royal and Fairy caves as they have distinct characters. Allow time to walk the surface trails where wildlife is commonly spotted in the early morning.
