About Remarkable Cave

A sea cave at the southernmost tip of Port Arthur where waves have carved a tunnel through dolerite headland, creating a framed view of the Southern Ocean through a rectangular natural window in the rock. The cave opening is best viewed from a platform above, where the ocean below can be seen rushing in and out through the narrow tunnel below. On a clear day the view through the cave frame extends to Maatsuyker Island 50km to the southwest.

History & Significance

Remarkable Cave is a natural sea cave carved over millennia by wave erosion through dolerite rock at the southernmost point of the Tasman Peninsula. The distinctive rectangular opening frames a dramatic view of the Southern Ocean, creating one of Tasmania's most photographed natural landmarks. It has become an iconic stop for visitors exploring the Port Arthur region and surrounding coastal wilderness.
