History & Significance

King Island was named by explorer Matthew Flinders in 1798 during his circumnavigation of Australia. The island became notorious during the age of sail as a graveyard for ships—dozens wrecked on its treacherous coastline during the 1800s whilst navigating the Roaring Forties. Today it is renowned for premium dairy farming, beef production, and shipwreck heritage tourism.
