About Undara Lava Tubes
The Undara Lava Tubes are among the world's longest and best-preserved volcanic lava tube systems, formed approximately 190,000 years ago during eruptions from Undara Volcano on the Atherton Tableland. Some tubes extend several hundred metres in length and are large enough to walk through easily, creating a cathedral-like underground environment inhabited by microbats, pythons, and unique cave-adapted invertebrates. The surrounding savanna woodland is also exceptional for wildlife, particularly wallabies and birds attracted to the permanent water at tube entrances.
