History & Significance

Mount Kosciuszko is Australia's highest mountain at 2,228 metres, named after Polish military leader Tadeusz Kościuszko by explorer Paul Strzelecki in 1840. It holds significant cultural importance to the Snowy Mountains Indigenous communities. The mountain is a major attraction within Kosciuszko National Park.

Getting There

Located in the Snowy Mountains near Cooma, NSW. Access via Kosciuszko National Park, approximately 470 km southwest of Sydney. Drive to Rawson Pass carpark (sealed road), then walk the remaining 2.4 km summit trail. Nearest town is Cooma (60 km away).

Parking

Free parking at Rawson Pass carpark (capacity approximately 200 spaces). Can fill quickly during peak summer months—arrive before 9 am. Accessible parking available. Overflow parking limited; consider visiting mid-week or arriving very early.

Visitor Tips

  • Start early to avoid crowds and secure carpark space
  • Wear layers—temperature drops significantly with elevation
  • Bring plenty of water and snacks; no facilities on the mountain
  • Track is well-marked but can be muddy and rocky—wear proper walking boots
  • Allow 3-4 hours return from Rawson Pass carpark to summit
