History

The estate was founded in 1891 by John Riddoch and Samuel Wynn, making it one of the pioneering producers in what would become Australia's most celebrated cool-climate red wine region. Over more than 135 years, Wynns has remained family-operated across four generations — an unusual continuity in an industry increasingly shaped by corporate ownership. Much of the estate's lasting reputation rests on its early and committed focus on Cabernet Sauvignon grown on Coonawarra's terra rossa, a combination that helped establish the region's standing both domestically and internationally.

The Vineyard

Coonawarra's terra rossa is one of the more unusual viticultural settings in Australia — a shallow band of red, iron-rich soil sitting directly over a limestone bedrock. The contrast between the fertile surface layer and the free-draining limestone below gives vines controlled access to moisture, encouraging deep root systems and producing fruit with concentration and structure rather than excess.

The estate's cool climate is shaped by maritime influence from the Southern Ocean to the south, which moderates temperatures and extends the growing season. Slow, even ripening is the result — particularly beneficial for Cabernet Sauvignon, which needs time to develop tannin structure without losing acidity. It also supports Shiraz and Chardonnay, both of which express the region's characteristic balance.

The Wines

Getting There

Wynns Coonawarra Estate is located in the township of Coonawarra, roughly 30 kilometres south of Penola and approximately 450 kilometres south-east of Adelaide. The Riddoch Highway is the main access route. There is no direct public transport to the cellar door, so a car is essential for the visit.

The property has a dedicated car park with space for coaches and buses, and caravan-friendly access is available — it's worth confirming facilities when you book if you're travelling by caravan or motorhome.

• Allow 2–3 hours to combine a tasting with a winery tour — it's a more complete picture of the estate than tasting alone.
• Book tours in advance, especially during harvest season (March–April) and peak tourist periods.
