Best Time to Visit

Visit during autumn (March–May) for vintage season and harvest events. Spring (September–November) offers pleasant weather and wildflowers. The Granite Belt region is quieter outside school holiday periods, making it ideal for a relaxed touring experience.

Ridgemill Estate sits in Severnlea, in the heart of Queensland's Granite Belt — a wine region that surprises many visitors with its cool climate and genuinely distinct character. Established in 1998, the estate has grown into a well-rounded wine tourism destination, offering cellar door tastings, tours, accommodation, and a wine shop all on the one property.

The Wines

Ridgemill Estate focuses on three varieties that suit the Granite Belt's conditions particularly well: shiraz, tempranillo, and verdelho. The region's elevation — around 900 metres above sea level — creates a cooler growing environment than you might expect from Queensland, with warm days and significantly cooler nights. That diurnal temperature variation helps grapes retain natural acidity and develop more nuanced flavour.

Shiraz is a reliable performer across the Granite Belt, and tempranillo has found a comfortable home here too, benefiting from the well-draining granite soils and the extended growing season that altitude provides. Verdelho, a white variety with Portuguese origins, rounds out the range with good texture and fruit character.

The Vineyard

The Granite Belt takes its name from the ancient granite bedrock that defines the landscape. Soils are coarse, gritty, and free-draining — conditions that moderate vine vigour and concentrate flavour in the fruit. At around 900 metres elevation, the region sits well above the surrounding plains, which accounts for the cooler temperatures and the distinct seasonal changes that shape each vintage.

Cellar Door Experience

The cellar door at Ridgemill Estate offers tastings and tours, giving visitors a chance to work through the estate's range with some context about how the wines are made. A wine shop is also on-site if you want to take bottles home or stock up before moving on to the next stop.

On-site accommodation means you can base yourself at the estate for a night or two, which makes for a more relaxed way to explore the region without the pressure of driving back to Stanthorpe or further afield at the end of the day.

Getting There

Severnlea is roughly 240 kilometres south-west of Brisbane, accessible via the New England Highway. The roads to the estate are sealed and suitable for caravans and campervans, which makes Ridgemill Estate a practical stop for those touring the region by road.

Visitor Tips

  • Check the Ridgemill Estate website for current opening hours and tasting session availability before making the trip.
  • Pack layers — the Granite Belt's elevation means temperatures can drop noticeably, even in summer.
  • Autumn (March–May) aligns with vintage and harvest, which adds energy to the region. Spring (September–November) brings pleasant weather and is generally a quieter time to visit outside school holidays.
  • Several other wineries operate in the area, making it easy to plan a broader Granite Belt touring itinerary around a stay at Ridgemill.
