Lake's Folly occupies a singular place in Australian wine history. Established in 1963 by Max Lake — a surgeon, author, and passionate winemaker — it was among the first wineries in the Hunter Valley to prove that premium Cabernet Sauvignon could be produced in this country. That reputation has endured for more than six decades, and a visit to the cellar door on Broke Road remains one of the more meaningful wine experiences the Hunter Valley offers.
The Wines
Cabernet Sauvignon is the winery's flagship variety and the starting point for understanding Lake's Folly's contribution to Australian wine. Max Lake's work with the variety helped shift perceptions of what the Hunter could produce beyond Semillon and Shiraz, and the wine continues to be the cellar door's centrepiece. Chardonnay and Shiraz are also part of the range, all grown on the Pokolbin site and shaped by the region's distinctive growing conditions.
The Vineyard
The vineyard sits in the heart of Pokolbin, where the Hunter Valley's volcanic soils and moderate temperatures form the basis of the region's reputation for cool-climate wine production. The elevated position of the site aids drainage and allows afternoon breezes to cool the canopy, extending the ripening period and contributing to the flavour complexity the wines are known for. These conditions suit Cabernet Sauvignon particularly well — a fact that Max Lake identified well before the variety became widely established in the region.
Cellar Door Experience
The atmosphere at Lake's Folly is relaxed and unpretentious — fitting for a winery that built its name on substance rather than spectacle. The cellar door has an intimate, historic character that reflects the age and significance of the property. Tastings follow the casual format common to Hunter Valley cellar doors, though specific fees and any booking requirements are best confirmed directly with the winery ahead of your visit, as arrangements can vary depending on group size and the time of year.
There are no formal dining facilities on-site, but the grounds are picnic-friendly and you're welcome to bring your own food. If you're planning a longer visit, it's worth picking up supplies from nearby Pokolbin before you arrive.
Getting There
Lake's Folly is located at 2416 Broke Road, Pokolbin, roughly two and a half hours' drive north of Sydney. Broke Road is one of the main vineyard routes through the area and is straightforward to navigate. Maitland and Newcastle are the nearest major towns. There is no public transport to the cellar door, so a private vehicle or organised tour is the practical option. On-site parking is available, and the road access is suitable for caravans, though it's worth checking with the winery directly if you're arriving with a large vehicle or a coach group.
Visitor Tips
Weekdays tend to be quieter than weekends, which makes for a more personal tasting experience if your schedule allows. Autumn — March through May — is harvest season across the Hunter Valley and one of the more rewarding times to visit, with warm days, cooler evenings, and activity throughout the region. Spring (September to November) offers pleasant conditions and fewer visitors than the peak summer period. December through February can be hot, and the school holiday periods across winter and summer bring larger crowds to the valley generally.
If you're combining Lake's Folly with other cellar doors, Broke Road and the surrounding Pokolbin area have no shortage of options to fill out a day of wine touring. Given the winery's place in Australian wine history, it's worth doing a little reading before you visit — the context adds considerably to the experience.
