About the Mt Buller Climb
16.4km climb from Mirimbah Gate to Mt Buller village - Victoria's most consistent 6%+ alpine ascent and a Tour de Femmes regular.
The Mt Buller climb proper begins at Mirimbah Gate (where the toll booth sits in winter) and rises 16.4km to the alpine village at 1,600m. Total elevation gain is approximately 970m at an average of 5.9% - making Buller the steepest of the Victorian sealed alpine climbs by average gradient. While the full ride from Mansfield is 47km, the climb itself starts at Mirimbah after a flat 30km warm-up along the Delatite River.
The gradient is remarkably consistent: the steepest 5km section (around 7%) hits between the 6km and 11km marks, with a brief easing near Howqua Gap before a final ramp into the village. There are no false flats and no descents to break the rhythm - it's a true climber's climb. The road is wide, well-paved and lightly trafficked outside the snow season, with sweeping bends rather than tight switchbacks.
Mt Buller has hosted multiple stages of the Herald Sun Tour and Santos Festival of Cycling. Strong climbers complete the climb in 50-60 minutes; recreational riders should plan on 90-110 minutes. Best ridden November to April. The Mansfield Bakehouse and the Produce Store are the traditional start/finish points.
Gradient profile — Avg gradient: 5.9%, Max gradient: 10%.
