About the High Country Rail Trail
The High Country Rail Trail in north-east Victoria stretches 81km from Wodonga around Lake Hume to Tallangatta and up into the mountains, where it could eventually connect to Corryong, near the source of the Murray River.
During the 2026 Towong Shire bushfires, the Bullioh to Shelley section of the trail sustained serious damage, including the loss of 14 of 16 historic trestle bridges that formed an iconic part of the trail’s railway heritage. The section is safe to use again but there are two creek crossings awaiting installation of temporary low level bridges, so the section with these 2 crossings is still shown as closed on our map.
Importantly, the highly popular section of trail between Wodonga and Bullioh, via Tallangatta and Old Tallangatta, was not impacted by the fires and remains open and ready to be enjoyed. Visitors are warmly encouraged to experience this 51‑kilometre stretch of trail and to support businesses in the economically impacted lakeside town of Tallangatta. Refer to Further Information below for more details on the restoration effort.
The High Country Rail Trail is undulating to Bullioh, with some moderate gradients. Bullioh to Shelley is all uphill at the steepest gradient trains could manage, so plan your trip accordingly. The surface is of varying quality beyond Old Tallangatta.
