About This Trail

The East Gippsland Rail Trail runs through farmland and forests in eastern Victoria, with spectacular views of the trestle bridges and countryside in its 96km length between Bairnsdale and Orbost. It finishes at the famous long trestle over the extensive Snowy River floodplain. There are some steep diversions around unrepairable trestle bridges from Bruthen eastward. Bairnsdale to Bruthen (30km): This section is asphalt and features a restored timber-and-steel trestle bridge over the Nicholson River Bruthen to Nowa Nowa (28km): There’s a long, steady climb to Colquhoun but it’s in fresh mountain air through shady forest
