Mt Wellington (kunanyi to its traditional Palawa owners) towers directly above Hobart and offers one of the most accessible big-mountain climbs in Australia. From the Hobart waterfront the road rises 21.5km to the 1,271m summit, gaining approximately 1,270m of vertical at an average of 5.9%. The climb is split into two distinct sections: a moderate 8km warm-up through the suburbs of South Hobart and Fern Tree, then a relentless 13km second half above Fern Tree on Pinnacle Road that averages 7%.
Above The Springs (775m) the road becomes exposed and weather-beaten, with regular cloud cover, gusty winds and even summer hailstorms. The final 3km features the iconic switchbacks visible from anywhere in Hobart and a brutal 9% pinch into the summit car park.
Strong climbers complete the full ascent from the waterfront in 70-85 minutes; recreational riders should plan 100-130 minutes. The summit offers 360-degree views over the Derwent Estuary, Bruny Island and the Tasmanian highlands when clear - and zero visibility plus 50km/h winds when not. Carry a full waterproof shell year-round.
